The New Year is a time for making resolutions, even for those who are retired or living in an adult residence. You are never too old, and it is never too late to create better habits or learn new tricks – and this is the time of year to do just that. The fact is that every life can benefit from changes that can bring a little more health, a little more friendship, a little more learning, or a little more joy. Here are some easy ways to incorporate a fresh breath of air into your life – no matter your age.
Join a Book Club: At an assisted living facility, there are often a wide variety of clubs and activities that you can join. If you don’t see something you like, start a new club! Getting together with people who have the same interests can enrich your life significantly and allow you to continue to learn, grow and explore new hobbies. Ask the administration at your residence for a list of possible clubs and get involved.
Attend Some Fitness Classes: Exercise is important for people of any age, and getting older doesn’t;t above you from the need to keep your body moving! Those who exercise are more sound in both body and mind. The good news is that you don’t have to join any strenuous exercise classes – in fact, you probably shouldn’t. But most assisted living facilities have some age- and ability-appropriate exercise classes that you can join, from walking to chair aerobics. No matter your age, there is some form of exercise that can improve your life – which is why exercising is one of the most popular resolutions for people of all ages.
Make New Friends: One of the best aspects of moving into an assisted living facility is the opportunity to make as many new friends as you would like. There are so many ways to meet new people, from activities and socials to the dining hall. Many people who move into an adult residence feel intimidated and a little afraid to come out of their room and meet people, but you shouldn’t! Everyone has moved into the facility at some point, and everyone likes having new friends. Try smiling and saying hello as a start – you’ll be amazed at just how many friends you will make. And here’s a tip – if you meet someone who is reluctant to go to the dining hall or join an activity, offer to go with them and pick them up at their room to walk together.
Visit Those Less Mobile: Sometimes, older individuals can feel like they no longer have a lot to offer the world, and it can get a little lonely. But there are many people in an assisted living or memory care center who don’t get out of their room very often – whether because of physical limitations or their own fears and insecurities. Everyone has a gift to share, and it can be as simple as walking the halls and talking with other residents. You don’t even have to be a great conversationalist – just offer your presence and friendship.
People of all ages adopt New Year’s resolutions because they recognize a part of their life that can be improved. For those living in an assisted living residence, they have both time and the opportunity to learn something new or meet someone interesting – so for 2023, make a new goal and get more joy out of life.
