Most people want to stay in familiar surroundings and maintain their independence as they age. And although it is largely unfounded, some seniors fear feeling “institutionalized,” and being able to afford the care they need. These variables combine to make seniors try to live at home as long as possible, but this may not be the best or safest option for many older adults. In fact, living alone can represent many risks to senior citizens that could be alleviated by moving to a senior residence.
Here are five great reasons to consider assisted living over living alone.
- Loneliness: Living alone can feel very isolating for senior citizens, especially for those who are homebound or cannot drive. A recent research report from JAMA Internal Medicine discovered that approximately 4.2 million Americans over the age of 70 rarely or never leave their homes. Isolation is one of the leading causes of depression in older adults and can result in many mental and physical health benefits. In assisted living communities, single-story floorplans encourage socialization with peers and friends, while transportation options allow continued interaction with the world.
- Safety Concerns & Injuries: Failing eyesight, limited mobility, and minor safety hazards such as an electrical cord or throw rug can put senior citizens at risk for slips, falls, and broken bones and may even be fatal. If you notice your loved one’s home is overcrowded or cluttered, stairs are steep and home maintenance is lagging, it may be time to explore assisted living. These facilities generally offer housekeeping, laundry, and meals, so your senior can live in a safe environment.
- Inadequate Nutrition: Malnutrition is a serious health concern for older adults. Insufficient nutrition and dehydration can occur as seniors experience decreased appetites, difficulty chewing, and a lack of interest in cooking for themselves. Seniors living alone at home often no longer shop for, prepare and eat three healthy meals per day, which can cause serious health issues. If your loved one has no food (or spoiled food) in the refrigerator, they are likely not receiving adequate nutrition and may need assistance. At assisted living facilities, residents are not required to grocery shop or make meals. They can enjoy menus tailored to their unique health needs and enjoy meals shared with friends and colleagues.
- Confusion about Medication: The average senior adult takes four or more different medications each day, so confusion regarding their medication schedule is surprising. Seniors living alone must be able to remember the correct daily dosages and keep up with their refill schedules. If an older adult can’t keep track of how much medication they took or completely forgets to take their medication, staying at home represents a serious risk. Most assisted living residences offer medication management to their residents.
- Protection against Criminals: Seniors living at home are often targeted by criminals who prey on the vulnerability and trust of seniors. Whether they fall victim to a telemarketing scheme or a knock from a “service technician” at their front door, the National Consumer Law Center has found that up to 80 percent of fraudulent calls are aimed at older customers.
Living alone at home is possible for many senior adults who are able to live and thrive independently, but for many, it creates an unhealthy and unsafe environment. Senior living allows older adults to preserve their independence and “age in place” safely and comfortably – and to live a fulfilled life.
