In a recent blog, we discussed some of the resources that are available to seniors, but we also noted that we had found even more to share. In this blog, we will continue our blog series sharing these listings of senior resources that may help older adults in various ways.
Let’s Recap the Discussion
Retirement can be a time of great freedom, but it can also present some problems for seniors living on a fixed income. Even seniors who have no financial worries, however, sometimes struggle to navigate through life by themselves. These resources, both national and local, can help in many ways. Check out these senior resources and take advantage of the benefits that you didn’t even know were available!
SHIP: Government programs can be complex and challenging for any senior to navigate. SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Programs) will assist seniors in understanding their Medicare benefits better. Program employees will work with the individual to make sure they are aware of all the programs they are eligible for, as well as help them with the application and qualification process. A SHIP specialist provides guidance, counseling, and assistance free of charge.
PACE: PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) is one of several available Medicare programs. (Read about more here.) PACE is dedicated to assisting older adults in obtaining the care and services required to age in place if they are not yet ready to give up their independent lifestyle and move into an adult living residence. PACE works to cover the necessary expenses to bring needed care to your home.
Senior Community Service Employment Program: Many seniors reach retirement age and decide retirement is not everything they thought it would be. Whether they need extra money, or simply miss having a sense of purpose and going to work every day – they often decide that they want to get back into the workforce. To assist them in achieving that goal, the United States Department of Labor created a Senior Community Service Employment Program that helps senior citizen job-seekers find part-time work to begin earning money again.
Area Agency of Aging Directory: Senior citizens are often targeted by scammers as easy victims. Because they have been victimized so often, many seniors have difficulty identifying trustworthy professionals who offer honest advice. The Area Agency of Aging has assembled a directory to guide seniors to the legitimate resources seniors can rely on when they need assistance. The site allows individuals to search by city or zip code to find businesses or professional counselors that are willing to assist with a wide variety of specialties – including legal and financial assistance, home repair and renovation, and health insurance providers. If you or a loved one is feeling confused about navigating those senior resources that can genuinely help, this vetted directory can be a lifesaver.
