When senior citizens retire, they can feel isolated and cut off from the rest of the world. But retirement gives older adults an excellent opportunity to reinvent their lives and do all the things we never had time to do before. Volunteering is a perfect option for retirees looking to fill their time with a fulfilling pastime. But volunteering is more than a chance to fill some hours. Research has shown that those who volunteer their time to help others are happier, experiencing something called “the warm glow.” Finding a place to volunteer also can provide a sense of social connection and purpose. Here are some popular places to volunteer – which is best for you?
Share your Knowledge: If you love kids, you can look into volunteer teaching opportunities – either at a local school or online. You can also look into working at a tutoring center. Another option is to mentor adults – if you were a business person or other type of professional, organizations like SCORE can connect you with startups or small businesses that could use your expertise.
Help Feed the Hungry: These are difficult times, and with rising inflation, many people are struggling to make ends meet. There are few activities more fulfilling than helping those in need. Most communities have food banks you can volunteer at, and some have soup kitchens or food outreaches. You can also check with local churches for any outreaches and programs they may offer – they are always happy to recruit volunteers. Depending on your comfort level, you may cook meals, hand them out, sit with patrons and talk, or give out food packages. If you still drive, you may wish to consider Meals on Wheels, a national organization that delivers meals to shut-ins. Not only will you be providing a valuable service, but you can have real human connections with people who desperately need it.
Support Cultural Destinations: Florida has a wide variety of cultural, natural and historic destinations. A wide variety of volunteer personnel often runs organizations like theaters, botanical gardens, aquariums and museums. Here is a list of volunteer opportunities in The Villages for you to consider.
Work with Animals: Many people love animals but aren’t allowed to have one of their own – either because of their living situation or because of the responsibilities and cost involved. But there are many opportunities to volunteer work with animals in need, such as at animal shelters. Many of these shelters and rescues need people to walk their dogs, play with cats and kittens, or help with basic administrative tasks. These facilities also can use help with raising money and awareness. Start with the ASPCA or local privately run animal shelters in your area. If you can have an animal at our residence, you may look into fostering. Not only will this give needy animals a much-needed temporary home while they wait to be adopted, but you’ll also enjoy the many wonderful benefits of socializing with animals. Finally, if you live in an adult living residence, you can find hundreds of opportunities to help the other residents every day. Whether sharing a meal, playing a game of cards or just listening to someone’s stories – spending time with people who are alone is one of the best ways to volunteer your time. Speak with your facility administrators to discuss any opportunities there may be at your residence.
