Once the decision has been made to move a loved to assisted living, the process of downsizing and packing begins. If you are wondering what items are appropriate to bring and which should potentially be left home, this guide should help. Of course, every assisted living community is different – so if you have any questions you can speak with the administration at the facility your family ultimately selects. Let’s take a look at those items that you should pack for your move to your new home.
Here are some general categories to consider:
Personal Items
Personal items are necessary in order to establish a sense of familiarity and routine. For the initial few nights in the new apartment, be sure to pack the following in an overnight bag:
- Several changes of clothes
- Pajamas, slippers and a robe, if they are in a habit of wearing these
- Medications, eyeglasses and hearing aids
- Toiletries and hygiene items
Additional personal items to bring along include:
- Photos and keepsakes that will make the space familiar
- Purses or wallets for purchases
- Jewelry or watches, if these items are worn daily
- Any necessary cane, walker, or wheelchair
- Copies of legal and financial paperwork
Home Furnishings and Decor
Home decor items will go a long way to making the new apartment feel like home. Depending on preference, you may include these items when you pack for your move:
- Plants and flowers
- Pictures and personal photos
- Mirrors, large face clocks, and favorite organizational items
You may wish to bring the following furniture items as well:
- A familiar bed/mattress
- Side table for books, medications, or water
- Dresser, tabe or desk based on usage
- A small sofa, and an additional recliner or chair
Pastimes and Hobbies
Assisted living facilities typically offer the opportunity to participate in a wide range of social, recreational and wellness activities. New residents may also wish to bring their own items that represent their own interests and passions, such as:
- Television or radio
- Computer or tablet, all chargers
- Books, audio books, puzzles
- Playing cards and board games
- Hobby supplies, arts and crafts supplies, gardening supplies
Simple Kitchen and Household Items
New residents may need a few items for a small kitchenette to prepare a small meal or to be able to prepare a cup of tea.
- Kitchen supplies
- Coffee maker or teapot
- At least two sets of plates and silverware
- Towels and linens (two sets)
- Hangers and a hamper
Basic Cleaning Supplies
Not all assisted living facilities are the same, and the level of housecleaning may vary from place to place. It would be practical for new residents to have a few basic cleaning supplies o keep things tidy until a housecleaning crew comes to deep clean the room.
For small messes or quick clean-ups, consider bringing:
- Broom and dustpan
- Surface cleaning wipes or multipurpose cleaner
- Paper and cloth towels
- Dish soap
Downsizing for Assisted Living
Helping your loved one pack for your move to assisted living means downsizing and decluttering to exist in a smaller space. Here are some examples of items experts recommend you notbring to an assisted living facility, at least initially until you understand the lifestyle:
- Personal valuables – Cherished items and heirlooms might be best stored in a secure location to avoid damage or loss.
- Oversized furniture – Appropriately sized furniture facilitates safer movement around the space.
- Area or throw rugs – The floors should be kept clear of any unnecessary items to prevent tripping.
- Collectibles and knick-knacks – Space will be limited, so keeping decor to a few favorite items will make the room seem larger and less cluttered.
- Furniture with wheels or without armrests – Wheeled chairs can cause injury. Armrests provide an ergonomic and comfortable way to relax, and provide stability while standing.
