If you have a loved one in assisted living, you should be aware that taking them on day trips is not only allowed – it is encouraged! In fact, taking a friend or family member on an excursion is a fantastic way to let them know that they are still special, remembered, and worthy of your time. A Banyan Residence in the Villages loves when family members remain involved in our residents’ lives. Because of this, we’ve put together a few ideas for planning a day trip that you can consider to create special memories for seniors.

Remember, everyone is different – so be sure to consider your loved one’s physical health, medical needs, and personality when planning a day trip. Staff at their assisted living facility will be happy to provide insight if you ask.

Outdoor and Nature‑Powered Outings

Here in Florida, fall temperatures can be quite warm. Still, the sun is definitely less intense, and it is easier to plan a day trip as the air cools just a bit. Here are some of the nearby outdoor destinations that you might wish to consider.

Lake Griffin State Park: This state park offers many gentle ways to get outdoors without overdoing it. There are about 2 miles of hiking trails through swamp and sandhill habitats; you can also paddle, canoe, or take a guided pontoon boat tour (wheelchair accessible) to enjoy water views. Highlights: the “Swamp Trail” is a boardwalk through marshland (1.3‑mile round trip), which is fairly accessible, plus there’s a very old live oak tree that’s remarkable.

Fort Cooper State Park: A nice mix of history, nature, and easy walking. Fort Cooper has more than 5 miles of self‑guided nature trails that wind through hardwood hammocks, sandhills, and around Lake Holathlikaha. They also have paved paths connecting to the Withlacoochee State Trail if someone wants a gentler and more accessible paved route. Picnic facilities, interpretive signs, playgrounds, and wildlife viewing make this a great outing.

The Villages’ Butterfly Garden (Fred Funk Butterfly Garden): If beautiful gardens are more relaxing than long hikes, this is a lovely option. The Villages Butterfly Club (in cooperation with community groups) maintain a butterfly garden in Lady Lake. It’s a peaceful spot to walk slowly, watch butterflies, maybe even bring binoculars for other wildlife.

Town Squares & Outdoor Town Center Walks: The Villages is known for its multiple town squares (Spanish Springs, Brownwood Paddock Square, Lake Sumter Landing, etc.). These are lovely for a more leisurely day: stroll around the square, enjoy fountains or lakefront views, browse shops, maybe catch live music or a small band outdoors in the square.

Indoor & Mixed Options for Day Trips

When the weather is too hot, too wet, or you want some shade, here are some good indoor/mixed options.

The Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center: For a more formal show—concerts, Broadway style musical productions or dance — this theater brings high‑quality performances to the area.

Savannah Center, The Tracy Performing Arts Center, Studio Theatre Tierra del Sol: These venues offer a variety of resident (local) and touring productions. Smaller shows can be easier on mobility and hearing, depending on seating.

Tips to Make Day Trips Even More Pleasant

Although you may plan the perfect day, remember to remain flexible. If your loved one seems tired or irritated, be willing to cut the day short or change your immediate plans. Remember, the goal is to have a memorable time together and enjoy your time. To try to ensure the best day possible, here are a few tips:

  • Choose mornings or late afternoons when the temperatures are lower. Mid‑day sun in Florida can still be intense, even in cooler seasons.
  • Bring something light but warm (a sweater or wrap), since shady areas, theaters, or boats can be breezy or air‑conditioned.
  • Research the walkability of each location. Some trails are paved or have boardwalks, while others are dirt; choose based on your mobility.
  • Plan for rest stops — benches, shade, and restroom access are key.
  • Drive or use a golf cart if available to reduce walking distance.
