Everyone likes heading out for a special day, to go on a fun outing or explore a new place. This doesn’t change with age. In fact, research shows that getting out of the home regularly adds to quality of life for senior citizens. Unfortunately, many of the seniors in the country – approximately 2 million of them – are considered homebound. This situation increases the risk of depression, anxiety and chronic health conditions. Many caregivers or family members are intimidated by the thought of taking elderly loved ones for a day trip – especially if that person has dementia. But the benefits of such an effort may very well be worth it, and will create important memories you will cherish.

Of course, COVID-19 was responsible for many people being stuck indoors over the last 18 months, but many in Florida are now able to get out and about with proper precautions.

Plan for Success: You have to understand your loved one’s capabilities and limitations. If they rarely walk further than from their living room to the kitchen and back to their bedroom, a day that involves hiking is bound to fail. Instead, think about an outing that is more appropriate, such as going to a matinee at a theater, or setting up chairs along the beach to relax and watch the wildlife. You can take them to a beautiful outdoor trail or venue, just be sure to scout it out first, and have a place planned where you can set up some chairs to relax. If your family member has Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, familiar activities and places are your best bet. Maybe you can take a drive through their old neighborhood, or take them to see an old friend.

Preparation is Key: Wherever you decide to go, it’s crucial to prepare and plan for any possible scenario. Be sure to double-check the weather and be aware of any possibility for traffic jams (such as going to the beach on a holiday weekend). Even if you’re going to a park or trail, as we discussed above, call or visit ahead of time to understand where to park, if there is wheelchair access and if restrooms are convenient. Consider every element of your day – does your loved one need mobility assistance? Can they walk on their own? Are they overwhelmed in crowded spaces? Do you need to bring their medications along?

You also want to pack proactively, even for a brief outing. Some ideas for a senior outing survival kit includes:

  • Prescription medications and doctor’s phone numbers
  • A first aid kit
  • A light sweater, hat, sunglasses, and umbrella
  • Hygiene items and a change of clothes
  • Extra water and healthy snacks
  • If they are prone to anxiety, bring a familiar item such as a fidget toy, small blanket, or even scented oils they use in their room.

Stay Flexible and Calm: No matter how much you prepare for an outing with an elderly loved one, unexpected things happen. Your loved one may feel sick, exhausted, or just be cranky, uncomfortable or uncooperative. If they are a dementia patient, they may even get disoriented, confused or angry. If they seem inconsolable or you can’t get the situation under control, don’t feel bad if you need to cut your day short. It’s important to not take it personally if they react negatively. For the elderly, some days are better than others. You should be proud of yourself for your good intentions, and try again another day.

If all else fails, simply bringing your loved one for a walk around the grounds of their facility is sure to make their day. The key is to bring some variety and excitement to their day.
