On occasion, before somebody moves into an assisted living facility, they can experience anxiety about the whole ordeal. And families ask us often what we recommend to help them deal with that.

It’s true that there is a stigma in some people’s mind that assisted living is a sterile hospital-like environment. And they’re actually taking a step down in their life, when in reality, that’s not the case. It’s important that your loved one gets an opportunity to tour the community that they’re going to move into, and even tour multiple times.

What I recommend is returning to the facility when you do not have to have a marketer walking you around, and you’re able to kind of explore the grounds on your own. And it would be great if the administrator was not on property, so you can see how the operation is actually run on everyday basis.

Now, you can line up your visit to coincide with live music, or perhaps a barbecue that they’re sponsoring so you can get excited about, you know, living here and experiencing some of the things that we do. But while you’re here, it’s important that you do find a private spot such as a courtyard, where you can listen to the waterfalls and the birds and just reflect; Am I comfortable? Do I feel safe?

And you may even strike up conversations with other residents that are maybe feeding the fish and ask them, are you happy here? What do you like? What do you not like? If you can make a connection with an existing resident prior to moving in, that person then becomes a familiar and friendly face that you can rely on when you ultimately do move in.

It’s also important to affirm with the person that they will have visitors often, friends and families, and that they don’t have to stop doing the things that they love, like having Thanksgiving dinner at home or going to their church. Not just any church, but the one that they’ve grown up with every Sunday with their family.

Ultimately, you want them to understand that nothing about their lifestyle has to change. It’s just they now have access to all of these great amenities and people that are here specifically to take care of them.
