As temperatures soar across Florida this summer, staying hydrated becomes not just a recommendation but a necessity—especially for seniors. As we age, our sense of thirst diminishes, making older adults less likely to feel thirsty even when their bodies need fluids. Dehydration can lead to a host of serious health issues, including urinary tract infections, kidney problems, and heat stroke. The problem is, many seniors simply don’t drink enough water. They may experience a decreased sense of taste or difficulty swallowing. Perhaps, they simply don’t like water, so persuading them to drink enough can be a significant challenge. Thankfully, there are plenty of creative and enjoyable ways to help your senior loved one get enough hydration without constantly pushing glasses of water.
- Flavor the Water Naturally: Plain water can be unappealing for some, but a splash of natural flavor can make all the difference. Try infusing water with slices of lemon, strawberries, orange or cucumber. You may even want to try mint or basil to enhance the flavor and transform hydration from a chore into a treat.
- Serve Hydrating Foods: Many fruits and vegetables – such as strawberries, watermelon, oranges, cantaloupe, cucumbers and celery – have a high water content. In fact, these tasty foods are all over 90% water! By incorporating them into snacks, salads, smoothies or ice pops, you loved one can eat their way to proper hydration. Chia pudding is another fun option—chia seeds soak up a lot of water and provide fiber and omega-3s.
- Offer Herbal Teas and Broths: Herbal teas served hot or iced can be a comforting and flavorful alternative to water. Chamomile, peppermint, or fruit-blend teas are hydrating and caffeine-free. Clear soups and broths—especially those served chilled like gazpacho—can also provide both hydration and nourishment.
- Make Smoothies or Protein Shakes: Blended drinks are not only hydrating but can also be packed with nutrients. Use a base of water, milk, or juice and add fruits, vegetables, and protein powder. They can replace a light meal and offer a uniquely refreshing way to cool down.
- Make Hydration Part of a Routine: Sometimes, seniors just need a little structure. Set hydration “reminders” into daily routines—like a glass of water before each meal, one with medications, or after a walk. Visual cues like a full pitcher on the table can also encourage sipping throughout the day.
- Use Fun and Appealing Drinkware: Believe it or not, a fun or personalized cup can encourage drinking. Brightly colored water bottles or personalized mugs can make drinking water more fun, and insulated tumblers keep drinks cold and refreshing even in the summer heat.
- Encourage Small, Frequent Sips: Rather than asking your loved one to drink large glasses at once, encourage small sips throughout the day. A few ounces every hour adds up and is easier for many seniors to manage, especially if they dislike the feeling of drinking too much at once.
- Monitor Fluid Intake Subtly: You can keep an eye on their hydration levels without being too pushy. If you live with them (or visit them often), watch for dry mouth, dark-colored urine, fatigue, dizziness, or confusion which could indicate dehydration.
