May is nearly here, and in South Florida, that means summer is nearly upon us. Even if the calendar gives us seven more weeks, the heat rarely waits that long to show up. Protecting senior citizens from the summer heat is vital, as heat stroke, sunburn, and heat exhaustion can all have terrible effects on older adults. As temperatures rise, it is essential to consider the precautions necessary to keep everyone safe. Even now, in the spring, the sun is strong and can cause damage – especially to those who do not spend a lot of time outside. Here at A Banyan Residence, we are committed to the health and well-being of each of our residents, so we offer this information and advice.
The Dangers of Heat Stroke
Heatstroke is also known as heat exhaustion and is the result of too much exposure to high temperatures. As the body becomes overheated, many serious health issues can result. Those already suffering from underlying health conditions – or those taking certain medications – are especially vulnerable to succumbing to heatstroke. Older adults and senior citizens are therefore at increased risk of this dangerous condition, and it tends to target those who have experienced heat exhaustion in the past.
Important to Note: Many medications that seniors take may increase the likelihood of developing heatstroke. These drugs include specific heart and blood pressure medications, as well as many diuretics, beta-blockers, and antihistamines.
A senior citizen who is suffering from heatstroke is likely to sweat excessively and have a clammy feel to their skin. Feeling chills (such as when one has a fever) also points to the possibility of heatstroke, especially if the surrounding air is hot and the patient is shivering. Victims of heat exhaustion may also experience headaches, rapid heartbeat, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, fainting spells, muscle cramps, and diarrhea, and discolored urine. An individual who is under the influence of heat exhaustion may appear confused, disoriented, or “lost.”
Protecting Senior Citizens in the Midst of an Attack
If you are with someone who may be experiencing an attack of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, it is essential to act quickly. If symptoms are not dealt with promptly, it could result in more severe health problems.
- Move the individual indoors and place them in air conditioning as soon as possible
- If you cannot get them indoors, look for a shady area away from direct sunlight
- Remove or loosen any unnecessary or restrictive clothing.
- Cool the body with an ice pack or cool compress.
- Call a physician as soon as possible, even if symptoms seem to be abating. Getting a professional opinion is important to ensure that there are no lingering issues.
Before You Go Outside
If you are a senior or are responsible for protecting senior citizens in their daily life, here is the essential information you need to keep in mind as summer’s heat approaches.
Dress Properly: Loose-fitting clothing is best. Lightweight materials will permit the body to remain sufficiently cool and help to avoid overheating.
Keep Hydrating: It is imperative to take in enough water throughout the day. Alternatively, seniors can choose sports drinks that contain electrolytes that can replenish the system of nutrients depleted through sweating. Experts also strongly advise avoiding alcohol and caffeine when spending time out in the sunshine, as both can result in dehydration.
Protect Your Skin: Experts recommend utilizing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, and reapplying multiple times throughout the day. Vulnerable seniors, in particular, should wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect their eyes. Having an umbrella is valuable rain or shine, as it is efficient for protecting senior citizens from UV rays and providing shade.
Plan Carefully: Between noon and 4 p.m., the sun is at its strongest. Planning your outings before and after that window can help protect your loved one from heat stroke. Stay hydrated and find shade no matter the time of day you are outdoors.
Enjoy your summer!
