Florida is on track to experience its hottest summer in decades. Protecting senior loved ones against the sweltering heat is essential every year, but this year we are even more concerned about heat stroke, sunburn, and heat exhaustion. As the temperatures keep climbing, it is vital to enact important precautions to keep everyone safe, especially the elderly. The blazing sun is strong and can cause harm – especially to those who are not accustomed to spending time outside. Here at A Banyan Residence, we are proud of our commitment to the overall well-being of each of our residents, and this is our annual article to discuss senior safety in the heat.

Avoiding Heat Stroke

Heatstroke (or heat exhaustion) is caused by excessive exposure to high temperatures – although the term “excessive” is relative. It can actually only take a few minutes for the sun to begin to cause harm.

As the body overheats, many severe health issues can manifest. Those already living with chronic health conditions – or those taking specific medications – are more vulnerable to heatstroke, putting older adults and seniors at increased risk of this dangerous condition. Important to Note: Heat stroke tends to more frequently affect those who have experienced the condition previously.

Many medications that senior citizens take may increase the chances of suffering heat stroke – including heart and blood pressure drugs, diuretics, beta-blockers, and antihistamines.

A senior adult with heat stroke will exhibit excessive sweat and have clammy skin. Chills, similar to those experienced during a fever, also indicate heat exhaustion. Victims of heat stroke may also develop headaches, rapid heartbeat, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, fainting spells, muscle and stomach cramps, diarrhea, and discolored urine. They may also present as disoriented or “lost.”

Protecting Your Loved One During an Attack

Acting quickly when heat stroke occurs is essential. If symptoms are not dealt with right away, more severe health problems could occur.

  • Get into an air-conditioned area as soon as possible.
  • If you cannot move the victim indoors, find a shady area away from direct sunlight
  • Remove any restrictive or unnecessary clothing.
  • Use an ice pack or cool compress to cool the body down.
  • Call their doctor as soon as possible, even if symptoms are easing.

Before You Leave the House

If you are an older adult living in Florida, or you are responsible for a senior loved one, here is the necessary information t protect against summer heat.

Dress Properly: Loose-fitting and lightweight clothing is most appropriate and will allow the body to remain cool and help to avoid heat stroke.

Hydrate Continually: During this heat, it is essential to drink sufficient water throughout the day.  Sports drinks with electrolytes may also be used to prevent heat exhaustion, but alcohol and caffeine can promote dehydration.

Skin Protection: Experts recommend applying sunscreen with a minimum of 15 SPF several times throughout the day. Senior adults should wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect their eyes. Keeping an umbrella on hand is useful – both for intense sun and sudden rain showers.

Plan Thoroughly: Between noon and 4 p.m., the blazing hot sun is at its strongest. Scheduling activities before and after that time frame can help protect against heat exhaustion. Anyone outside at any time of the day should stay hydrated and seek out shade whenever possible.
