In a recent blog, we discussed the definition of respite care and discussed how to know when this type of service is appropriate for your family. This article will revisit some of the basics and then provide families with a series of questions they can ask to make sure they are choosing the right facility for their needs.
Did You Know? The National Alliance for Caregiving estimates that over 34 million Americans are currently caring for a senior adult as an unpaid caregiver. Although caring for someone you love can be meaningful, it can also be extremely frustrating and exhausting. No matter how well-intentioned, family caregivers often sacrifice self-care and burn out – which is bad for them and the loved one they are caring for.
Respite Care Defined
Whether this specialized care is provided on a scheduled or emergency basis, it is a service designed to provide needed relief for caregivers of adults or children who require developmental, mental, or physical care. (Note that some programs may not accept minor children.) Caregivers may need to take time away for a personal situation, a business matter, or a much-needed break. Other situations that may inspire respite care include patients who have recently undergone rehabilitation but require additional care or patients who had outpatient surgery or treatment but need a few extra days of rest before returning home.
Caregivers may find it disconcerting to leave their loved ones in someone else’s care, even a professional senior residence. It can be tempting to believe that you are the only one who knows how to appropriately clean, dress, feed, or provide medication for your loved one. You may also worry that they will be afraid, alone, or confused when in respite care. That is why finding the perfect fit for a respite care provider is vital for both your and your loved one’s peace of mind.
Here are a few key questions to ask any facility you are considering for respite care:
- What types of services do you offer?
- How often can we take advantage of respite care?
- What options are there for sleeping? Will the patient have their own room or share with a roommate? Will they have their own bathroom?
- What is the ratio of staff to respite care residents? Do you have enough staff to adequately care for full-time residents and my loved ones?
- How much notice is required for a respite care appointment? Do you accept residents in an emergency situation?
- What financial options do I have? Does Medicare or other insurance provide coverage for respite care?
- What options are provided for dining? Can visitors come in and eat with the resident? Will they eat in their room or be escorted to a cafeteria? Will you accommodate special diets?
- Do respite care patients have access to amenities and any programs taking place? If appropriate, will you encourage the resident to attend any events and socials?
- What is the visitor policy?
- What do you do if there is an unexpected medical emergency?
