I’m Blake Anderson. I’m the administrator of A Banyan Residence Assisted Living. And the question we get often is, how do we prevent self-isolation in our resident base?

Truth be told, this is a problem that is not addressed outside of the assisted living well enough. Now, when somebody moves in, we know as much about them as possible from the resident themselves, as well as any family or friends that might be involved. That information is then relayed to all of our staff internally, but most specifically, is our activities team.

Now, our activity team is responsible for sponsoring an activity every 30, 60 minutes throughout the day of different types, right? It may be an exercise, it might be arts and crafts. We always try to create activities that appeal to the facility as a whole, but also to these smaller pockets that maybe have a more niche interest.

We always try and meet all of our residents’ interests with different or specific types of activities. We don’t expect residents to just walk to the activity that they’re interested in. Now, we will actually go and seek them out and go door-to-door and encourage them to join us.

Now, should this not work, we will also rely on other residents. That may be ambassadors for us on the social side. And we will actually bring those residents with us to encourage a resident to come join us for an activity.

We’ve had a staggering success rate for people that have told us in the past, mom or dad does not do activities. “Dad hates arts and crafts.” “They just want to be in the room watching TV.” We’ve had incredible success, actually getting these people to integrate into our program and stop isolating themselves, even on their own.
