The New Year has arrived, and with it, 365 new days of promise and opportunity – and everyone has the chance to have a year full of fun and new experiences. While seniors may think that resolutions are a young person’s game, think again! Resolutions allow each of us, regardless of age, to contemplate our lives and change anything we choose to. Senior citizens actually have the luxury of time that many others do not, so why not use that time to enrich your life?
Everyone wants to wake up each day with a sense of purpose. Everyone needs to feel interested, engaged, and included – and accomplishing a new task or project, no matter how small, feels amazing. Let’s talk about some of the new year’s resolutions that senior citizens can easily take on over the next few months.
Achieving maximum health is a worthy goal at any age, but seniors who improve their health and wellness will see their quality of life improve as well. The good news is small changes can result in significant rewards! So this year, resolve to eat fewer cookies but more grapes. Resolve to stop using salt, but watch some online videos on healthy spices and flavorings to increase your food’s flavor. take advantage of this gorgeous region we call home, and resolve to take a walk every day in the sunshine. If you can’t physically handle taking a walk, ask someone to help you outside – the sunshine and fresh air are good for you and may even boost your immune system. Talk with your friends about learning some yoga stretches, and meet everyone in the park. If you can’t drive or live in assisted living, invite people to come to you – or simply take a class on YouTube. Talk to your doctor about any health issues you may have, and discuss if there are healthy, natural ways to feel better.
Making new friends at any age is exhilarating and exciting. Seniors are no different than anyone else – you enjoy friendship, laughter, companionship, and support. If you live in assisted living, simply walk down the hall and get to know people. Start a book club, a bridge tournament, or a movie night. Invite those with similar interests to explore some new crafting ideas with you. Ask if you can start a community garden! If you live at home, host a simple luncheon and invite the neighbors – no one says friends have to be the same age! Some of the most precious friendships are intergenerational. Walk down the street and say hello to those you see, or ask if anyone on the street is a shut-in and could use a friend to spend time with them. If you are able, adopt a new friend from the local animal shelter!
Learning something new at any age keeps the brain sharp and improves both emotional and physical health. No matter your physical capabilities, the number of things you can learn is endless! Try container gardening and experiment with different plants and flowers, or fill a bird feeder with seeds and do some birdwatching. Listen to audiobooks, learn how to play the piano, or even take some online community classes -the world is your oyster. If you can get out to the local senior center, check out any educational classes that are of interest – and make new friends there too. Never stop learning, and never stop growing.
Senior citizens have a wealth of experience, knowledge, and wisdom that should never be locked away! In 2023, make some resolutions that expand your world and share your personality – have fun, make friends, learn new things, and have a wonderful time doing it.
